licensed professional counselor

Gwen Haagensen

Looking for relief from anxiety or depression? Struggling with self-limiting beliefs or preparing for a major life transition? Want to expand your self-identity or get more from your interpersonal relationships?  The encouragement and feedback you receive from good old-fashioned talk therapy allows a connection when you want to be heard or need to be seen, understood, and supported. Few things in life provide the healing power of a trusting, intimate relationship with another human being, and being able to develop that with a professional counselor is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself.

Whether you and your partner are struggling in your current relationship or you just want to build upon the healthy foundation you've already cultivated together, couples counseling can give you the tools and insight you need to be better - together. Catering to both heterosexual and LGBTQ couples, I provide a supportive space where partners can explore communication dynamics and sex positivity. Also, as a Prepare/Enrich certified facilitator I'm able to give couples visual assessments to help create awareness of strengths and challenges to fortify their pre-marital, marital, or family relationships.

It may be difficult to recognize, but the relationship patterns developed with your primary caregiver in childhood can be perpetuated in all interpersonal relationships throughout the rest of your life. Schema therapy uses an evidence-based approach that helps you identify these patterns, empowering you to realign yourself and enrich your relationships.

Most individuals that struggle with disordered eating face ambivalence in therapy, like gaining weight, eating "normal" food and purging. As a result, engaging clients to make a change is a big part of treatment. Managing anxiety is another one. For many, life has often revolved around managing their eating disorder, often creating an imbalance in other areas of life. In addition to counseling, working with a licensed dietitian is also crucial for recovery and I can recommend several in the area that can provide assistance and nutritional support. Please note: I use the NEDA Guidelines for levels of care and only offer Level One, Outpatient services which is the Action and Maintenance phases.

Acknowledging that you need help is never easy, but it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself. Whether you’ve decided to get help to control or moderate your alcohol or drug use, or just want to explore the role that addiction might play in your life, you are being proactive in getting help. Addiction is a family illness that inevitably alters the lives of everyone. I can help those suffering from their loved ones addiction as we navigate a new course with healthy limits and redraw our boundaries to include what is, and isn't, within our control.

I practice from an attachment perspective which focuses on important relationships in our lives and the innate human need to feel connected, loved & supported.

"We can be redeemed only to the extent
to which we see ourselves.”

I offer a no fee 10-15 minute initial consultation.

We will talk about what brings you to therapy, gather a brief history related to the issues that you are struggling with and discuss any concerns you may have.

I will provide you with information about my training, experience and what the process of therapy looks like. All your information is secure and confidential, and will never be shared.

Lastly, I will go over scheduling and financial policies with you.

about me

I took the scenic route to becoming a clinician after spending many years as a graphic designer. At 45, I decided to recreate myself and move toward a career path I'm passionate about.

Like you, I have encountered a fair amount of life's struggles of my own, and disclose that in the therapeutic relationship where it benefits my clients. I'm a parent of 3, and have navigated my share of shifting family dynamics as well as exploring the early stages of my own journey into middle age.

These experiences, combined with my education and training, allow me to not only understand the needs of my clients, but to provide genuine empathy without a stitch of judgement. I am also a secular (non-religious) therapist.

I know what it feels like to be a client, as I have been in counseling at various times throughout my life, and continue to integrate this as a regular discipline of self-care.

With Kindness,

  • Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, University of WI, Whitewater

  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
    State of Wisconsin License #7468-125

  • Substance Abuse Counselor (SAC-IT)
State of Wisconsin License # 18624-130

  • Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC)

  • American Counseling Association (ACA) member

While I have training as a generalist, I have advanced skills and training in areas of eating disorders, marriage and family, as well as my certification as a Substance Abuse Counselor (SAC-IT), where I completed my addiction studies abroad in Scotland.

I am skilled at using a wide variety of therapeutic approaches, including attachment theory work, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, schema and insight-based therapies.

I tailor my approach based on the specific goals and strengths of each client, so that each person experiences therapy that is a good fit for them. All therapy I do is evidence-based and is designed to be empowering, with a focus on depathologizing the person.

My passion in counseling is create a relationship built on safety, where people feel accepted and challenged to grow in new and meaningful ways.

I see counselling as an opportunity to help people diminish pain and suffering, cope with the challenges of life (both normal and extraordinary), and experience increased joy, purpose, and self-acceptance.

  • Gwen has been great! She is very easy to open up to and I really appreciate how she shares her own stories and experiences to help me understand my concerns better.

  • My life has been positively impacted by Gwen. She is caring, smart and extremely joyful. I am so grateful for her presence in my life.

  • It's so difficult finding a good counselor that specializes in eating disorders, and I'm so grateful to connect with a counselor not in my immediate area that actually specializes in EDs. Gwen has helped me so much, and I would recommend her to anyone I know!

  • I just started meeting with Gwen and instantaneously felt a connection with her and comfort in sharing! The very first meeting we had, she gave me a simple yet very useful and productive task to try by setting boundaries with my kids and household, and it is working. I highly recommend Gwen!

  • Gwen is a fantastic counselor. She’s warm and inviting but also direct and respectful when voicing her thoughts and feedback. Which is very helpful.

  • I have only had one session with Gwen by myself and another session with my husband and myself. We are both so happy that we decided to take the step to do counseling this way. It is nice to do it from the privacy of your own home. Gwen has been a blessing to us in the short time we have worked with her. She really understands our struggles and has offered great advise already. We are very impressed with Gwen!

  • Right off the bat, Gwen just seemed to “get me”. I really appreciate her honest, direct counseling. She has become very dependable to me and it feels great to be able to have someone like her available to me. Thank you!

  • The help Gwen has provided has been beneficial in helping me work through some personal and interpersonal issues. She has recommended a variety of sources for me to learn more about what I'm struggling with to help empower me. Her caring yet direct manor have helped me felt heard and supported. Thanks for your help Gwen, you are helping me live the life I want to live.
